FRANCIS ECK — US STORY PROPOSAL
For: US culture, Caribbean, and international feature editors
Format: Reported profile with an artist interview and selected archival material.
Subject: Profile idea: from teaching PE in Alsace to painting in Saint-Martin

Hello,

A painting made in Saint-Martin is joining a private collection in Guadeloupe this October. Behind that small piece of studio news is a longer story: Francis Eck, a former physical education teacher from Alsace, has spent decades building a painting practice in the French Caribbean.

I’d like to propose a profile about that move and what it changed in his work. Born in Dannemarie, Eck held his first solo exhibition in Altkirch in 1980. His subsequent exhibitions took his paintings to New York, Tokyo, Beijing, and Macao. Today, the studio in Saint-Martin is the starting point for seascapes and gestural work on white grounds.

An interview could connect three questions: why he left teaching for painting, how the Caribbean changed his use of color, and what remains of Alsace in the landscapes he paints now. The October acquisition of Élan des voiles supplies a current opening without turning a private sale into a public exhibition.

The kit includes a concise biography, eight milestones, recent paintings, and the full French-language studio career archive. I can help arrange an interview and identify the archival material most useful to the story.

Best,
Annabelle Eck
